KIDDUSH HASHEM
In Torah and TaNaKh we can read:
Lev 22:32 Neither shall ye profane my holy name;
but I will be hallowed among the children of Israel: I [am] the LORD which
hallow you,
Num 27:14 For ye rebelled against my commandment in the desert of
Zin, in the strife of the congregation, to sanctify me at the water before
their eyes: that [is] the water of Meribah in Kadesh in the wilderness of Zin.
Isaiah 8:13 Sanctify the LORD of hosts himself; and [let] him [be] your
fear, and [let] him [be] your dread.
How must we sanctify G-d?
Deut 10:12 And now, Israel, what doth the LORD thy God require of
thee, but to fear the LORD thy God, to walk in all his ways, and to love him,
and to serve the LORD thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul,
Deut 10:13 To keep the commandments of the LORD, and his statutes, which
I command thee this day for thy good?
Let us read these lines some more: ''for thy good''. If we shall be to fulfil all commandments of G-d all will be ok for us.
If we don't obey God... He told to Pharaoh:
Exod 4:22 And thou shalt say unto Pharaoh, Thus saith the LORD, Israel
[is] my son, [even] my firstborn:
Exod 4:23 And I say unto thee, Let my son go, that he may serve me: and
if thou refuse to let him go, behold, I will slay thy son, [even] thy
firstborn.
Pharaoh refused to let Israel go, and he (Pharaoh) was punished:
Exod 12:29 And it came to pass, that at midnight the
LORD smote all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of
Pharaoh that sat on his throne unto the firstborn of the captive that [was] in
the dungeon; and all the firstborn of cattle.
In Numbers 20 we read:
Num 20:1 Then came the children of Israel, [even]
the whole congregation, into the desert of Zin in the first month: and the
people abode in Kadesh; and Miriam died there, and was buried there.
Num 20:2 And there was no water for the congregation: and they gathered
themselves together against Moses and against Aaron.
Num 20:3 And the people chode with Moses, and spake, saying, Would God
that we had died when our brethren died before the LORD!
Num 20:4 And why have ye brought up the congregation of the LORD into
this wilderness, that we and our cattle should die there?
Num 20:5 And wherefore have ye made us to come up out of Egypt, to bring
us in unto this evil place? it [is] no place of seed, or of figs, or of vines,
or of pomegranates; neither [is] there any water to drink.
Num 20:6 And Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly unto
the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, and they fell upon their faces:
and the glory of the LORD appeared unto them.
Num 20:7 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
Num 20:8 Take the rod, and gather thou the assembly together, thou, and
Aaron thy brother, and speak ye unto the rock before their eyes; and it shall
give forth his water, and thou shalt bring forth to them water out of the rock:
so thou shalt give the congregation and their beasts drink.
Num 20:9 And Moses took the rod from before the LORD, as he commanded
him.
Num 20:10 And Moses and Aaron gathered the congregation together before
the rock, and he said unto them, Hear now, ye rebels; must we fetch you water
out of this rock?
Num 20:11 And Moses lifted up his hand, and with his rod he smote the
rock twice: and the water came out abundantly, and the congregation drank, and
their beasts [also].
Num 20:12 And the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron, Because ye believed me
not, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall
not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them.
What did Moshe and Aaron need do? To fulfil all G-d commanded them.
We need be holy in every aspect of our life.
1Peter 1:14 As obedient children, not fashioning
yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance:
1Peter 1:15 But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all
manner of conversation;
1Peter 1:16 Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.
Holiness is the fruit:
Rom 6:22 But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.
A word ''holiness'' in Greek is hagiasmos. ''Hagiasmos can describe the state of being set apart from sin and the world and unto deity (God), such a state occurring when we first believe and more frequently referred to as justification by faith, a one time event, not to be repeated. Hagiasmos can also refer to the process of progressively being set apart from sin and being conformed more and more into the image of God's Son. Clearly this meaning of sanctification is an ongoing process by which believers are set apart by God as a special people to grow spiritually in personal holiness and to develop Christ-like character, the culmination of which is glorification, which occurs when we see Christ.'' Our sanctification is the will of G-d:
1Thess 4:3 For this is the will of God, [even] your sanctification,
that ye should abstain from fornication:
1Thess 4:4 That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in
sanctification and honour;
About the sanctity of Israeli people:
Exod 19:6 And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of
priests, and an holy nation. These [are] the words which thou shalt speak unto
the children of Israel.
Deut 7:6 For thou [art] an holy people unto the LORD thy God: the
LORD thy God hath chosen thee to be a special people unto himself, above all
people that [are] upon the face of the earth.
Deut 14:2 For thou [art] an holy people unto the LORD thy God, and the
LORD hath chosen thee to be a peculiar people unto himself, above all the
nations that [are] upon the earth.
Deut 26:19 And to make thee high above all nations which he hath made, in
praise, and in name, and in honour; and that thou mayest be an holy people unto
the LORD thy God, as he hath spoken.
Deut 28:9 The LORD shall establish thee an holy people unto himself, as
he hath sworn unto thee, if thou shalt keep the commandments of the LORD thy
God, and walk in his ways.
''The phrase 'Kiddush Hashem' in rabbinic literature meant sanctifying the name of God through either ethical behavior, prayer, or martyrdom. However, since Tannaitic times, it has come to mean dying as a martyr rather than converting or disregarding certain fundamental principles of Judaism. The main text for this is found in a Beraita in Sanhedrin 74a:
All the transgressions which are found in the Torah, if someone says, transgress (one of them) and do not be killed, you should transgress and not be killed except for (in the cases of) idolatry, incestuous sexual relationships and spilling blood (i.e. murder)'' (http://www.lind.org.il/features/kidhashem_v19.htm)
'' ... Torah commands: "You shall not desecrate my holy name (Lo t’chalelu — hence Chilul Ha’Shem), rather I shall be sanctified (Ve’nikdashti — hence Kiddush Ha’Shem) among the Israelites" (Leviticus 22:32).
Maimonides interprets this verse as applying to "the whole House of Israel," and actually lists two commandments in this regard:
1) "You shall not desecrate." This is the prohibition of Chilul Ha’Shem, a commandment not to do anything to give God or the Torah a bad name.
2) "I shall be sanctified." This is the commandment of Kiddush Ha’Shem, to enhance the reputation of God and his Torah.'' (http://www.jewishjournal.com/home/preview.php?id=8499)
10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the
which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall
melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be
burned up.
11 Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of
persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness, (2 Peter
3:10-11)
