What does anointed mean?

Yeshua asked His disciples: ''Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?''

Matt 16:14  And they said, Some [say that thou art] John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets.
Matt 16:15  He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am?
Matt 16:16  And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.

Greek word "Christos'' is ''Anointed'' or Mashiah (Messiah) in Hebrew.

What does ''anointed'' mean? In Tanakh we see the ceremony of anointing was:

- for the priests:

Exodus 40:13  And thou shalt put upon Aaron the holy garments, and anoint him, and sanctify him; that he may minister unto me in the priest's office.
Exodus 40:14  And thou shalt bring his sons, and clothe them with coats:
Exodus 40:15  And thou shalt anoint them, as thou didst anoint their father, that they may minister unto me in the priest's office: for their anointing shall surely be an everlasting priesthood throughout their generations.

Lev 8:12  And he poured of the anointing oil upon Aaron's head, and anointed him, to sanctify him.

- for the kings:

1Sam 9:15  Now the LORD had told Samuel in his ear a day before Saul came, saying,
1Sam 9:16  To morrow about this time I will send thee a man out of the land of Benjamin, and thou shalt anoint him [to be] captain over my people Israel, that he may save my people out of the hand of the Philistines: for I have looked upon my people, because their cry is come unto me.

2Sam 2:4  And the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah. And they told David, saying, [That] the men of Jabeshgilead [were they] that buried Saul.

1Kings 1:39  And Zadok the priest took an horn of oil out of the tabernacle, and anointed Solomon. And they blew the trumpet; and all the people said, God save king Solomon.

1Kings 19:16  And Jehu the son of Nimshi shalt thou anoint [to be] king over Israel...

- anointing of the prophet Elisha:

1Kings 19:16  ... Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abelmeholah shalt thou anoint [to be] prophet in thy room.

King Cyrus was anointed of G-d:

Isaiah 45:1  Thus saith the LORD to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have holden, to subdue nations before him; and I will loose the loins of kings, to open before him the two leaved gates; and the gates shall not be shut;

In Isaiah we can read G-d has anointed Yeshua:

Isaiah 61:1  The Spirit of the Lord GOD [is] upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to [them that are] bound;
Isaiah 61:2  To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn;
Isaiah 61:3  To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified.

Acts 10:38  How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.

Heb 1:8  But unto the Son [he saith], Thy throne, O God, [is] for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness [is] the sceptre of thy kingdom.
Heb 1:9  Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, [even] thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.

          HA-MESHICHA (THE ANOINTING)

16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. (Romans 1:16)

The Good News are the power of Hashem. In order to share the Good News we need to have the power, the anointing (ha-meshicha in Hebrew) too.

8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. (Acts 1:8)

Thanks to this power almost 3,000 people, then almost 5,000 people believed in Yeshua Messiah!

10 But my horn shalt thou exalt like the horn of an unicorn: I shall be anointed with fresh oil. (Psalms 92:10)

Every believer in Yeshua (Jesus) has the anointing. When believer ready to serve to Hashem (service is work, in Hebrew: avodah), when he has obedience to Him and is looking for His leadership, Hashem gives him more anointing.

33 And with great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all. (Acts 4:33)

8 And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and miracles among the people. (Acts 6:8)

1 And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God.
2 For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.
3 And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling.
4 And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power:
5 That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God. (1Cor. 2:1-5)

9 And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power,
20 Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places,
21 Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come:
22 And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church,
23 Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all. (Eph. 1:19-23)

5 For our gospel came not unto you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Ghost, and in much assurance; as ye know what manner of men we were among you for your sake. (1 Thess. 1:5)

5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away. (2 Tim. 3:5)
