The Hardware

There are two main types of POS systems, each with different requirements: tablet POS systems and barcode scanner POS systems. Tablet POS systems are the ones most often used in today’s restaurants. They can be used by servers and bartenders so that bartenders don’t have to keep up with their food tickets, but they don’t require a lot of hardware in order to function. Barcode scanner POS systems are for more traditional setups where there is a lower amount of equipment to manage. These systems usually require the use of special barcode scanners and cash drawers.

The Software

There are two main types of POS software: desktop and mobile. Desktop POS software is used in traditional restaurants where there is a centralized computer system tracking all the orders for the whole restaurant. This type of system usually runs on Windows machines and eases a lot of labor, but it can be expensive to implement. Mobile POS software is also known as an iPad POS system, but these are different from tablet POS systems in many ways. If you want to require your staff to be able to input orders on their iPads, then this software can handle this task. Mobile POS software is also usually less expensive than desktop software, but it can be difficult to manage all the POS systems in your restaurant if you’re using a mobile device.
